Often times your employer requires you to sign a non-compete agreement that restricts your ability to work for any of its competitors for a certain geographic area and for a certain length of time. In addition, the agreement may also contain a non-solicitation covenant that prevents you from engaging with and soliciting customers and clients of the prior business for a certain geographic area and for a certain length of time.  

The restrictive covenants also mandate which State and which jurisdiction will control the contents of the agreement.
